Ngo Thanh Hung

For Ngô Thanh Hưng, art is a continuous journey through memory, culture and place. Born in 1982 in Vinh City, Vietnam, he belongs to a generation of Vietnamese artists whose practice is shaped by both local heritage and regional exchange. His work reflects a deep awareness of movement: the movement of people, of history, of nature and of the inner life.

Hưng graduated from Hue Fine Arts University in 2006 and later completed a Master of Visual Arts at Mahasarakham University in Thailand in 2012. Today, he is an art lecturer at Danang University of Architecture and a member of the Vietnam National Fine Arts Association. This balance between artistic practice and education gives his work a thoughtful foundation. He approaches art not only as a maker, but also as someone who observes, teaches and contributes to a wider cultural conversation.

Over the years, Hưng has built a steady presence across Vietnam and Southeast Asia. His career includes solo exhibitions, group shows, international workshops and cultural art projects in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, India and Singapore. Rather than seeing these experiences as separate milestones, they form an ongoing dialogue in his practice. Each place adds another layer to his understanding of identity, heritage and contemporary visual language.

The titles of his solo exhibitions reveal much about the emotional direction of his work. Nghiệp, presented at Da Nang Fine Arts Museum in 2021, suggests questions of fate, action and consequence. Flow, held at The World Artspace in Ho Chi Minh City in 2022, points to rhythm, transformation and continuity. His 2025 solo exhibition Breath of the Earth at TAA Gallery in Ho Chi Minh City further reflects his sensitivity to land, nature and the quiet forces that connect human beings to the world around them.

There is a grounded quality in Hưng’s artistic path. His work does not seek spectacle for its own sake. Instead, it appears to grow from reflection, discipline and a close relationship with cultural memory. Through his participation in exhibitions such as Memory Land, Suvannabhumi: The Glorious Art of the Golden Land, Beyond the Frame and ART DIVERSITY 2026, Hưng continues to engage with themes that extend beyond the individual, touching on shared histories and regional imagination.

His achievements also mark an important recognition of this commitment. In 2022, he received the CLMTV&CN Young Artist Contemporary Art Award in Thailand. In 2024, he was honoured with the Vajirakeri Award Plaque at Maha Sarakham Rajabhat University for his contributions to cultural and artistic activities on an international scale. In 2025, he won the Bronze Prize at the UOB Painting of the Year competition, affirming his growing presence within the contemporary art scene.

In 2026, Hưng’s regional engagement continues with projects including ART DIVERSITY 2026 in New Delhi, international exhibitions and workshops in Thailand, O Ly Art Fair in Hue, and an invitation to speak at the UOB-NAFA Southeast Asian Arts Forum in Singapore. These activities reflect not only professional momentum, but also his role as an artist who moves between creation, education and cultural exchange.

At the heart of Ngô Thanh Hưng’s practice is a quiet but persistent search: to understand how art can hold memory, express movement and connect people across places. His journey is one of patience and depth, shaped by the earth beneath him and the many cultural landscapes he continues to encounter.
