Ho Huu An

After building a career in the pop-up greeting card industry, artist Ho Huu An turned fully to painting in search of a more personal visual language. Working across acrylic, gouache and silk, he explores human vulnerability, emotional fracture and the fragile forms of compassion that endure within difficult lives.

Ho Huu An did not arrive at painting through a conventional route. Before becoming an artist, he worked as an entrepreneur in the pop-up greeting card industry, a field that combined design, craftsmanship and emotional storytelling. Yet over time, the structure of commercial production no longer offered enough room for the complexity he wanted to express. Painting became a way to move beyond function and towards something more intuitive, intimate and unresolved.

His education reflects the same spirit of exploration. An first graduated from the Oceanography Department of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, before studying art history, aesthetics and contemporary art at CUCA. He later continued his training at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. This varied background brings a particular tension to his work: a sense of structure remains present, but it is constantly disrupted by instinct, emotion and experimentation.

An’s paintings are centred on the human figure, though rarely in a realistic form. Bodies bend, overlap and dissolve. Faces become simplified, contours break apart and limbs are reduced to fragments of colour. These distortions are not merely stylistic. They allow him to express emotional states that are difficult to describe directly: alienation, tenderness, violence, longing and the desire to be seen.

His ongoing project “Love” draws inspiration from “Chi Pheo”, the classic short story by Vietnamese writer Nam Cao. Rather than illustrating the story literally, An focuses on the relationship between Chi Pheo and Thi No, two people pushed to the margins of society. Their connection is brief and imperfect, yet it awakens something deeply human. Through their story, the artist considers how love can offer a moment of dignity even within lives shaped by poverty, rejection and despair.

The visual language of the project shifts across materials. In the acrylic and gouache studies, figures are built from rough strokes, muted colours and fractured shapes. The compositions feel tense and compressed, reflecting both physical hardship and emotional instability. In the silk studies, however, the atmosphere becomes softer. Colours blur into the surface, edges lose their certainty and the figures seem to float between presence and disappearance.

This contrast gives the work its emotional force. Brutality and tenderness are never separated. They exist within the same image, just as they often exist within the same life. Love is not presented as a perfect solution, but as a fragile interruption.

An has participated in group exhibitions organised by CUCA, the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, ULA and the Goethe-Institut. His work has also received recognition from Galeria Gisel Duran in Argentina and No Name Collective.

Through painting, Ho Huu An continues to search for a language that can hold contradiction. His figures may appear broken, but they are never empty. Beneath their distorted surfaces remains a quiet insistence on connection, vulnerability and the possibility of being human.
