Paula Carvalho is born from the quiet beauty of things often overlooked. Seashells found along the shore, feathers resting on the ground, and handmade Vietnamese Giấy Dó paper come together in delicate compositions that speak of land, water and air. Each work carries a soft, contemplative energy, inviting viewers to slow down and notice the poetry hidden in natural forms.

The project began with a long-standing love for seashells. Collected from beaches, mainly in Da Nang and nearby coastal areas, each shell holds its own texture, curve and memory of the sea. Beautiful on their own, they also carry the atmosphere of the places where they were found. Feathery Tide gives them a new presence, transforming these small fragments of nature into pieces made for quiet appreciation.

A visit to a village in northern Vietnam introduced the artist to Giấy Dó, traditional Vietnamese handmade paper. With its organic surface, soft fibres and natural imperfections, the paper became the perfect background for the shells. It does not overpower them, but gently frames their beauty. Each sheet is unique, with visible traces of plant fibres that remind us of the human hand and natural process behind its creation.

Feathers bring colour, movement and lightness into the work. Peacock, pheasant and parrot feathers, gathered only after falling naturally to the ground, add a delicate sense of air. Their colours shift with the light, revealing subtle tones that may not appear at first glance. Placed beside shells, they create an unexpected harmony between the weight of the sea and the softness of flight.

Every material in Feathery Tide is natural, and every work is one of a kind. No shell, feather or sheet of paper can ever be repeated in exactly the same way. Nature provides the elements; the artist arranges them into new visual stories. A piece may begin with a clear idea, but often changes during the process, guided by instinct, emotion and the character of the materials themselves.

The result is art that feels calming, whimsical and quietly magnetic. These works do not ask to be understood immediately. They reveal themselves slowly. A composition may suggest a bird, a moth, a forest, a wave, or something entirely personal to the viewer. Their meaning changes with each gaze, allowing each person to find their own image, memory or feeling within the piece.
